~back of book~

~First Line: "It was on the first day of summer vacation that Poppy found out she was going to die."
~Last Line: "She held Eric and felt his breathing and was at peace with the night."

Review: This was my second time reading this omnibus, and I rediscovered why I love this series so much! There were magnificent characters, spectacular plots, and a good amount of action -- not too much, not too little. Since the book's covers contain three books, I will give a mini-review of each novel.

Secret Vampire: The first stories in omnibuses seem to always end up being my favorites; it was no different when I reread this series starter. The heroine, Poppy, finds out that she has cancer and there's no cure. The hero, James, has a startling secret -- he's a vampire. The only way Poppy will survive is if she's turned; will she give up her life, family, and friends? *My favorite character in SV: Phillip, because he's the kind of older brother I would have liked to have.*

Daughters of Darkness: The sequel novel revolves around "three renegade vampires and a secret vampire killer." When Rowan, Kestrel, and Jade move in with their aunt, they discover that someone has murdered her -- and knew she was a vampire. Mary-Lynnette, the heroine of DoD, gets caught in the midst of everything when her curiousity gets the better of her logic. Then there's Ash, the hero. How can he and Mary-Lynnette ever be soulmates when they basically can't even stand each other? *My favorite character in DoD: Ash, because he always has some sort of smart-allicky comment, and whenever he was alone with M-L, you could tell that he really did care; he just didn't show it in public.*

Spellbinder: Thea and Blaise, witches you've been raised together since early youth, have only one chance left. They've been expelled from their high school after being there for only one month -- again. Now they are living with Grandma Harman, and if they mess up again -- rather, if Blaise messes up again -- they will be shipped to the Convent, the dark and gloomy home of their Aunt Ursula (the name even creeps me out). Blaise is up to no good as usual with the human boys at their new school. Thea, our heroine, is trying to keep her in line. Then she meets Eric, our gorgeous, totally popular, every-girl-wants-to-be-with-him hero. Blaise wants him to be her new boytoy, and Thea must take a stad against her "sister." Who will win the guy in a fight between witches? *My favorite character in Spellbinder: Thea, because she's always trying to take care of other people and make others happy. She puts everyone before herself.*

Overall, this omnibus was absolutely fabulous, and I can't wait to reread the next three Night World books! :D

Quotes from the Book:

" 'Are you nuts? Look, Phil, I was born in San Francisco. I'm not some bug-eyed monster from Alpha Centauri. I eat Wheaties for breakfast.' " ~Secret Vampire

"Jade put down the suitcase and cat carrier and pulled at the gate. To her surprise, itmoved easily.
'See, it may not look good, but it still works--' She didn't get to finish the sentence properly. The gate fell on her." ~Daughters of Darkness

" 'I wash my hands of you two and I don't want to know what's going on. Besides, I've got worries of my own. I have to decide between a Maserati and a Karmann Ghia.' " ~Spellbinder

Zan-Gah and the Beautiful Country by Allan Richard Shickman

Zan-Gah and the Beautiful Country (Zan-Gah, #2)
By Allan Richard Shickman
Publisher: Earthshaker Books, 2009
151 pages, paperback
Date Finished: 23/12/2010
Genres: Historical Fiction, Young Adult, Action, Adventure

~First Line of Book: "When Lissa-Na died, Dael wept real tears."
~Last Line of Book: "He only knew that the demons who had long possessed his twin had departed; that healing and regenration were still possible because there is a secret place in every soul that has never yet been wounded."

Again, thank you to Bonnie Lenz & Mr. Shickman for sending me these books. They were awesome! :D

Review: The sequel to Zan-Gah: A Prehistoric Adventure was amazing! The characters developed even more, and there were even some that made debuts. There was also more action, especially since we had another major battle.

Besides the predominant adventure that was made when Zan's people, the Ba-Coro, moved to the Beautiful Country, there were a few more travels that got to read about. My favorite was definitely when Zan, Rydl, Dael, and some of Dael's followers went looking for tar -- and found a volcano! It was really cool, but Dael started to creep me out a little.

I would definitely say read this novel! It really was an ah-mazing sequel, and I hope that you all get the chance to read this wonderful series :D. I can't wait until the third and fourth books are released!

(4.5 Kisses)

Quotes from the Book:

"He did not realize that Pax, who happened to be busy nearby, had overheard most of what was said -- had heard her husband praise Lissa-na and confess that he loved her. That was bad luck, and there was more to come."

"All three [mountains] were capped with snow, except that the central one, open at the top, sent up a column of rolling smoke. Bursts of fire and showers of hot sparks exploded from its ragged peak, followed moments later by loud growling noises. At each eruption the ground shook. The mountain's pure shape rose upward in even, symmetrical arcs that were both simple and sublime, while the fountain of fire at the apex challenged and polluted the sky." (It's a volcano! Cool, huh?)

"These desert people were unfamiliar with the wolf and afraid of it, but that did not slow them down and they ran with all their might."

"He had that strange aura of the other world shining from his still-pale face, and looked exactly like what he was -- a corpse that had returned to life."

Radiance by Alyson Noel

Radiance: A Riley Bloom Novel
By Alyson Noel
Publisher: Square Fish, 2010
178 pages, paperback
Date Finished: 20/ 11/ 2010
Genres: Young Adult, Fantasy, Coming of Age, Adventure

~First Line of Book: "Most people think that death is the end."
~Last Line of Book: "Occasionally gazing down at the earth plane as I soared through the clouds, knowing that just like all of the people rushing around right below me, I too had somewhere important to be."

Review: This was the first time that I had ever read a novel by Alyson Noel, and from how I enjoyed this one, I am sure I will enjoy others as well.

Radiance was about a girl named Riley Bloom who has recently died and crossed the bridge to the perfect afterlife. She and Bodhi, the dorky-looking ghost who is now her guide, go on a crazy visit to the earth plane to rid a mansion of a "Radiant Boy" and, eventually, that same boy's mother.

This novel had some awesome characters. Riley and bodhi, the main two, were definitely my favorites. The plot was really awesome. I liked how the place between the afterlife and the earth plane was called "Summerland." From what Noel described, it was a very pretty Summerland indeed. I can't wait to get my hands on Shimmer, the sure-to-be-epic sequel :).

Quotes from the Book:

"That's what they call it, 'Here.'
And if you're dumb enough to ask what time it is, they'll say,'Now.' "

"And now that I was settled it was time for my first day of school (yes, we have school Here -- it's not all cloud lounging and harp playing, you know)."

"I couldn't say I saw all that much. Ot at least nothing important anyway. Nothing that could be considered heart stopping (and no, my heart doesn't really beat anymore, it's just a figure of speech.)."

" 'Based on your accumulated history and your strong attachment to the earth plane, you will train as a Catcher. Any questions?'
Train as a what? A question that was soon followed by a gazillion others just like it.
'A Soul Catcher,' Samson said. 'A catcher of souls.' As if that made any more sense."

"The reasoning of some ghosts was beyond me. Some of them just didn't make the slightest bit of sense."

Book Review: Stray (Shifters #1)

Title: Stray (Shifters, #1)
Author: Rachel Vincent
Publisher: Mira, 2007
Page total: 618 pages
Date read: December 10, 2010
Genre(s): Urban Fantasy; Adult
First line of the book: "The moment the door opened I knew an ass-kicking was inevitable. Whether I'd be giving it or receiving it was still a bit of a mystery."

I look like an all-American grad student. But I am a werecat, a shape-shifter, and I live in two worlds.
Despite reservations from my family and my Pride, I escaped the pressure to continue my species and carved out a normal life for myself. Until the night a Stray attacked.
I'd been warned about Strays - werecats without a Pride, constantly on the lookout for someone like me: attractive, female, and fertile. I fought him off, but then learned two of my fellow tabbies had disappeared.
This brush with danger was all my Pride needed to summon me back . . . for my own protection. Yeah, right. But I'm no meek kitty. I'll take on whatever - and whoever - I have to in order to find my friends. Watch out, Strays - 'cause I got claws, and I'm not afraid to use them… (from the blurb)

Finally I can say that I’m a proud owner of a copy of Stray. My mom gave it to me as an early Christmas gift, and I read it in less than 5 hours. I have never entered a world of shape shifters before, and I found it fascinating. Vampires are old story by now, werewolves are catching up and I’ve seen many fairy books coming out lately although I’m not exactly fond of them due to some negative experiences. Anyway, I enjoyed exploring the world of Faythe, one of the eight unmarried female werecats in USA. While I’m tempted to tell everything I found mesmerizing, I wouldn’t want to spoil the opportunity to do it yourself.

This book contains lots of actions, sexy scenes and you can literally feel your adrenaline running through your vein although you’re not the one who’s fighting. What irritated me quite a bit was a) the lack of explanations of terms that are not very familiar to us, such as tabby, tom, Pride and Stray; and b) the heroine.
The terms aren’t the only thing the readers will learn later as the book progresses. When the book starts, you have no idea in what kind of situation the heroine is, much less her background. It all comes in flashbacks later on, which didn’t exactly bother me, but it sure had my mouth hanging wide open. I won’t tell you what had made me gaping stupidly at the book, but I can at least explain a few terms briefly, so you don’t get confused when you read the book for the first time:
tabby: a female werecat
tom: a male werecat
Pride: a group of werecats with one Alpha ruling over them and their territory (You might find a map of Pride territories in USA useful)
Stray: a human turned into a werecat by a scratch or bite of a werecat in their animal form

Now, the heroine, Faythe Sanders. As I said before, she irritated me. She has so many… sides. You can’t exactly say what kind of person she really is because she’s smart, stupid, bold, coward, brave, whiny, strong and stubborn, all in one. Overall, she’s a strong, stubborn and mostly smart woman with a tendency to behave like a teenager. (I have to remind myself over and over that she’s 23, not 17 although her poor judgment on what her heart says indicates that she has yet to outgrow teenage stubbornness.) She’s reluctant to get involved with Pride’s business first because she wants to have a normal life but when she finally realizes that she does have the potential to become a good Alpha (after her dad steps down or dies, of course), that’s the part where I like it best. It doesn’t happen until toward the end of the book, but there’s the promise that I won’t be disappointed in the following books. I really love it when I know from the very first book that I’m gonna love the series, don’t you?
Also, I loved almost every character Rachel Vincent has created in this book, including Faythe’s brothers, Marc, Parker, Greg (Faythe’s father and also the Alpha of South Central Pride) and Abby.

All in all, I definitely recommend the series to everyone looking for a good urban fantasy with an ass-kicking heroine and steamy romance. That being said, I feel obliged to add that this book is aimed at older readers than, let’s say, Twilight or City of Bones.

"A smile snuck up on me and I realized with more than a little alarm that -just like my father- I enjoyed negotiation. Damn. I hate it when my parents are right."

Reunion of the Untouchables by Kurt Frenier

Reunion of the Untouchables (StudyTrain, #1)
By Kurt Frenier
Publisher: Eloquent Books, 2010
209 pages, Google Docs
Date Finished: 19/ 11/ 2010
Genres: Young Adult, Fantasy, Coming of Age, Adventure, Some Action

~First Line of Book: "Ethan stared out the window."
~Last Line of Book: "He was committed to finding out exactly what the real story was."

"WOW!" That's the first word that came to my mind when I finished this epic author and series debut novel. A big "THANK YOU" shout out to Kurt Frenier for asking me to review this novel. I am really glad that I accepted your offer!

Now, on to my review.

Review: The main character, Ethan, is first met in old castle ruins in Switzerland, acting as a king of a royal court. Ethan doesn't like his life; his father just bosses him around and doesn't care. Then Ethan gets the story-turning letter to come aboard the StudyTrain for 8 years. He accepts the offer.

Ethan makes several new friends onboard the StudyTrain, and learns several new and exciting things, among them how to fly the magical train. Then Ethan, unfortunately, is offered a chance of power and leadership by the bad guy, Krixit.

Of course, in the end Ethan knows that Althulos, the Grandmaster on the StudyTrain, is the good person and not Krixit like he once believed.

This book had some great action and adventure. While o nthe StudyTrain, the children are traveling all over the world learning about different cultures. Ethan definitely went through some crazy times.

The characters were very well established, and you can tell the plot was thoroughly thought about before the actual writing took place. I can't wait to read the sequel to this wonderful series debut.

Quotes from the Book:

" 'Now leave,' Lana said. 'I want to take a bath.'
'I can rub your back if you want,' Ethan said, winking his eye.
'In your dreams!' she giggled."

Guest Review - Leanne

Finally got another Guest Review coming to you! This week, my beautifully-winged classmate Leanne is here :D. She has a book blog over @ Tales of the Mockingjay.

Leanne, why don't you explain a little about yourself to our lovely audience!

I love to dance and read books. I am also some one who lives life to the fullest, so I intend to go to college. I don't know where yet. So, I like writing reviews and things, but my life's hectic. Well, and I read reallly fast;) By the way, my name's Leanne.

And now that we know about her, let's enjoy her review of A Match Made In High School.

--Zakiya, the walking butterfly :)
----------------------------------------------------------

I finished the book A Match Made In High School by Kristin Walker. It is a pretty interesting book. I would probably say it is an average Young Adult (YA) novel. It has a lot of "dirty" jokes in it, which I personally find hilarious. But, this book would definitely be rated 13+. It is about a girl who has to take a marriage-ed class. She is paired up with an obnoxious jock who helps her through out the way, compliments her, torments her, and, ultimately, is a good friend, you might say. She has ups and downs with every other charachter in this story. This novel also is good because it has love, secrecy, heartbreak, rude people, good friends, and understandable concepts. There aren't many stories like this out there, but for Kristin Walker's first book, I'd say she did a pretty good job! I would recomend it to people who like YA books who don't mind cursing, dirty jokes, and the real, true way teenagers think. I would rate it 4 wings.

Book Blogger Hop

As always, this meme is hosted by Jennifer @ Crazy-for-Books.

This week's question comes from Marce @ Tea Time With Marce:

"What very popular and hyped book in the blogosphere did you NOT enjoy and how did you feel about posting your review?"

My answer:

--- Honestly, I have never read a book that everyone else enjoyed and NOT liked it. So I guess this doesn't exactly apply to me this week :). Although I thought I would have that problem when I read Nightlight (by Harvard Lampoon). I had heard a lot of people say that they absolutely hated the book. And I did, too, at first. But once you get into the story line more, you really start to enjoy it, as I did.

Anyway, I've never actually had a "popular and hyped book" that I didn't enjoy (: .

Happy Hopping to all,
Zakiya

Zan-Gah: A Prehistoric Adventure was an amazing series debut. The story's main character, Zan, is serious a lot, and has a twin named Dael, who is always cheerful and happy. Dael and Zan have a fight one day over food, and Dael wanders off -- and never returns. A year later, Zan earns a new name, Zan-Gah, for his bravery in the killing of an enemy. Zan starts having strange dreams about Dael and sets off to find and rescue his lovable brother. Zan makes new friends and basically becomes a man during his struggle to stay alive and successfully find his twin. Adventure, action, unity and forgiveness. This series debut will have you reading it whenever you ahve the chance! I recommend this book to all Historical Fiction lover. A great read indeed :).

Book Review: Strange Angels (Strange Angels, #1)

Title: Strange Angels (Strange Angels, #1)
Author: Lili St. Crow (pseudonym for Lilith Saintcrow)
Publisher: Razorbill (a division of Penguin Group USA), 2009
Date read: November 26th, 2010
Page total: 293 pages
Genre(s): Urban Fantasy; Young Adult
First Line of the book: I didn’t tell Dad about Grandma’s white owl. I know I should have.

Dad? Zombie. Mom? Long gone. Me? Well, that’s the scary part.
The Real World is a frightening place. Just ask sixteen-year old orphan Dru Anderson, a tough girl who has taken down her fair share of bad guys. She’s armed, dangerous, and ready to kill first and ask questions later. So it’s gonna take her a while to figure out who she can trust…
[…]
Alone, terrified, and trapped, Dru’s going to need every inch of her wit and training to stay alive. The monsters have decided to hunt back - and this time, Dru’s on their menu. Chances of survival? Slim to none. If she can’t last until sunup, it’s game over…
(From the back of the book)

Do you have a paperback copy of Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead by some weird coincidence? There is a sneak peek of Strange Angles at the end of the book, unless you’ve got on old version of the book. That’s how I got to know this book - so this excerpt-from-another-book-at-the-end-of-a-famous-book-advertisement-strategy worked this time.
Back to the book. This book was… weird. Like, very strange. I know it’s not the best way to describe a book, not to mention the nicest, but I found it weirdly good in a weird-good way, mostly because I can’t decide whether I like this book or not.
The book is packed with action because Dru is a hunter who hunts all kind of creatures that are not supposed to exist, including werwulfen (=werewolves), upir (=suckers=vampires), zombies, poltergeist, ghost, well, you get the picture. (For some reasons, the author prefers other names for mythical creatures, probably to distinguish them from other urban fantasies.) As you can imagine, there are plenty of action scenes, most of them involving guns, body combat and some mean kicks. And although my head was reeling from all those action scenes, the actual plot was very slow. The whole book felt like a long, long prologue for the real story, as if the real plot would take off in the second book. It wasn’t exactly boring but if you take out the action scenes, all you have is Dru’s encounter with Graves and how his life gets complicated as he gets involved with Real World.
Another thing I’m not very happy with is that Dru doesn’t describe the Real World to the readers, it’s like as if she thinks we know about it already. It irritated me a lot, but real explanation comes later in the book with other crucial information, and it’s worth waiting.
All in all, it was a compelling, funny read, and I’ll most definitely read the second book, because the first one ends with a cliff hanger and most importantly, I’ve got the feeling, it’ll be much better than the first book.

Quotes:

"Most girls go through a gawky stage, but I’m beginning to think mine will be a lifelong thing. It doesn’t bother me too much. Better to be strong than pretty and useless. I’ll take a plain girl with her head screwed on right over a cheerleader any day."

"I've been bitten, beat up, tied to a bed, James Bonded out, and now you finish off by choking a goddamn teacher!"

"You're not dead. You're too goddamn annoying to be dead."

"I guess since the groin is the center of a guy's world, he rarely guesses it isn't the center of yours."

Chosen by P.C. & Kristin Cast

Chosen (House of Night, #3)
By P.C. & Kristin Cast
Publisher: St. Martin's Griffin, 2008
320 pages, Kindle Edition
Date Finished: 25/ 10/ 2010
Genres: Young Adult, Coming of Age, Fantasy, Some Action, Romance

~First Line of Book: " 'Yep, I have a seriously sucky nirthday,' I told my cat, Nala."
~Last Line of Book: "As usual, Nala summed up my life perfectly: kinda funny, kinda gross, and more than kinda messy."

Review: This novel was shorter than I thought it was. First I'm at 25% read, and then 4 hours later I'm done. Of course, I wasn't reading the entire 4 hours, which further proves my point. I wish that P.C. & Kristin could have had more action in Chosen, but I suppose it didn't fit right with the rest of the plot for this novel.

Zoey is having some serious guy issues. She has imprinted on Heath, is dating Erik, and flirts with Loren whenever they're alone. On top of that, she has been lying to her friends, and once the find out the truth everything, they come to the conclusion that they can't trust Zoet at all anymore. To make the plot even crazier, Aphrodite and Zoey seem to be becoming friends!! Now if that doesn't make your mouth drop open, I honestly don't know what will. LOL.

Chosen was a wonderful addition to the House of Night series, and Untamed is sure to be even better :D!

Quotes from the Book:

"Both of us saw totally eye to eye about my mother. One, she made us sad. Two, we wished she would change. Three, we knew she probably wouldn't."

" 'That man is such a damn turd monkey.'
'Grandma!' I said.
'Oh, Zieybird, did I call your mother's husband a damn turd monkey out loud?'
'Yes, Grandma, you did.'
She looked at me, her dark eyes sparkling. 'Good.' "

"The last thing I needed was a secret affair with someone who was even more off-limits that a huiman ex-boyfriend. (Sadly, it seemed like the last thing I need is usually the first thing I get.)"

"I hated it when kids got all nervous and scared around me like they think I might turn them into something vile. Please. It's the House of Night, not Hogwarts. (Yes, I read the Potter books and love the movies. Yes, that's more proof of my geekness.)"

City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare

City of Ashes (Mortal Instruments, #2)
By Cassandra Clare
Publisher: McElderry Books, 2008
453 pages, paperback
Date Finished: 24/ 10/ 2010
Genres: Coming of Age, Young Adult, Action, Some Adventure, Fantasy, Some Romance

~First Line of Book: "The formidable glass-and-steel structure rose from the position on Front Street like a glittering needle threading the sky."
~Last Line of Book: " 'Yes,' Madeleine said. 'I mean I can show you how to wake your mother up.' "

Review: OH MY GOSH!! This book was such an incredible sequel to City of Bones. There was a little more romance, but not much. Unfortunately, Clary & Jace's relationship is sort of icky right now, especially by the time you get to the end of the novel. It's like they want to be more than brother and sister, but they don't want to disappoint others.... So annoying. They should hust follow their hearts already! But this is no time for love advice. Frankly, I'm the last person that should even be giving it. LOL.

Anyway, we had some more awesome humour, but sadly, we didn't have as much as we did in City of Bones. Clary also gets a chance to visit the Fair Folk, or in other words, the faeries. The Seelie Court might be beautiful, but like it's queen, it's full of cruel realities.

WARNING: Simon is having a weird time in his life since he learned about Clary and Shawdowhunters, etc. His world is about to get even weirder/ worse. But you have to read to figure out what happens! :D

I'm telling you, if you loved/ liked City of Bones, you will definitely enjoy this sequel. This series is unquestionably promising!

Quotes from the Book:

"Alec looked taken aback. 'Last time we faced a demon, she just cowered and screamed.' Seeing Clary's acid glare, he shot her an apologetic glance. 'I'm sorry, but it's true.' "

" 'Isabelle says the Queen of the Seelie Court has requested an audience with us.'
'Sure,' said Magnus. 'And Madonna wants me as a backup dancer on her world tour.'
Alec looked puzzled. 'Who's Madonna?' "

"This one caught the sleeve of Jace's jacket and tore it across.
'My jacket,' said Jace in a rage, and stabbed down at the thing as it rose, piercing its back. It shrieked and disappeared. 'I loved that jacket.' "

"She'd cried loudly enough that the man sitting across from her had offered her a tissue, and she'd screamed, What do you think you're looking at, jerk? at him , because that was what you did in New York. After that she felt a little better."

School's Out - Forever by James Patterson

School's Out - Forever (Maximum Ride, #2; The Fugitives, #2)
By James Patterson
Publisher: Little, brown and Company, 2006
409 pages, paperback
Date Finished: 9/6/2010
Genres: Action, Adventure, Coming of Age, Fantasy, Science Fiction, Young Adult

First Line of Book: "Sweeping, swooping, soaring, air-current thrill rides -- there's nothing better."
Last Line of Book: "Fang and I leaned against each other and laughed and laughed, unable to speak, for the longest time."

Review: This book was amazing! After waiting a whole month to read the sequel to The Angel Experiment, I was more than happy to to start this novel. There was more action, adventure, and more humans that make Max and the flock feel normal. More battles with Erasers -- wo've been upgraded; they now have wings -- and more romacne. Tere seems to be quite a few people kissing in School's Out - Forever, but it didn't go any farther so it's pretty clean :). I am definitely recommending this book and series. If you hven't read School's Out Forever, you should start ASAP. If you have even read The Angel Experiment: what are you waiting for?!!

Fang turned to me and grinned, making my world brighter. 'She offered to cook breakfast.' "
