The Final Warning by James Patterson

The Final Warning (Maximum Ride, #4; The Protectors, #1)
By James Patterson
Publisher: Little, Brown and Company, 2008
256 pages, paperback
Date Finished: 10/2/2011
Genres: Action, Adventure, Coming of Age, Fantasy, Romance, Young Adult, Science Fiction

In this breathtaking new story from the astonishing imagination of James Patterson, a girl has to save herself from an army assembled just to capture her-and maybe save the planet while she's at it.

Maximum Ride is a perfectly normal teenager who just happens to be able to fly, the result of an out-of-control government experiment.

Max and the other members of the Flock-six kids who share her remarkable ability-have been asked to aid a group of environmental scientists studying the causes of global warming. The expedition seems like a perfect combination of adventure, activism--and escaping government forces who watch the Flock like a hawk.

But even in Antarctica, trapped in the harshest weather on our planet, Maximum Ride is an irresistible target in constant danger. For whoever controls her powers could also control the world. Maximum Ride is James Patterson's greatest character, a heroine who manages to be human and fearless at once.

~Last Line: "My heart was so full of freedom that I felt like it mught burst."

Review: Leanne and several others forewarned me that The Final Warning wasn't nearly as entertaining as the preceding novels in the series. However, it was an ill forewarning. I enjoyed the Maximum Ride installation more than the other books, really.

In this book Max and the flock go to Antarctica to help save the world ... from global warming. I have to say, even though the world needs to save itself before it's too late, I definitely wasn't expecting them to travel to the South Pole. The flock enjoyed it down there, actually; they were free to fly around and got to see some penguins :). *Oh, how I do love penguins!*

As to be expected if you've started this series, there was unquestionably some action. Butt-kicking, "you better leave us alone" action at that. Obviously there's a little adventure involved since they are going to the bottom of the Earth. Max and Fang are having trouble with their relationship; to make it even worse for Max, Fang is falling for one of the scientists that they are working with. I LOVE Max, but she needs to make up her mind already! One minute she doesn't want Fang being all lovey-dovey with her, but then the next she can't stand seeing him flirting with other women, in this case the scientist previously mentioned.

But anywho, this is a really good addition to the Maximum Ride series. What makes it my favorite (so far) is that Max, after a lot of calamities, gets to speak in front of Congress about how they seriously need to start taking action to help save the world from global warming. Honestly, everything she tells them is true, and we need to pay attention to that. Max even provides some ways for the real world (which is us) to help out; you can find those at the very bottom of this post.

I really do hope that you get a chance to read this novel. I know that you will at least enjoy it a little!

Quotes from the Book:

"My eyes flickered when I heard the Voice inside my head. (You mean you don't have one? You can get 'em at Target.)"

"A teen magazine would have encouraged me to get in touch with my inner feelings. So I searched deep within myself and realized that my inner feelings were telling me to punch all of them in the face. Which is why teen magazines just don't seem to apply to my life."

" 'I am Gozen,' the big thing said.
Nudge's brow wrinkled. 'Like Japanese dumplings?'
'That woujld be gyoza,' Fang murmured at Nudge."

Save the World. Wings not required.

Did you know:

1. Every three months Americans throw away enough aluminum to rebuild the entire US air fleet.

2. Americans trash 700 plastic bottles every second. It's enough to make 2 million fleece sweaters every day.

3. A water faucet that leaks one drop per second will drip 165 gallons a month.

4. Recycling just one aluminum can saves enogh energy to operate a TV for three hours.

5. Americans use almost 100 billion plastic bags every year. Their use is banned in several countries.

What are you waiting for?

~First Line: " 'We have meticulously crafted the skeleton of our new world,' the Director proclaimed from the large TV screen in the conference room."
~Last Line: "And if we are, it won't be pretty."

Review: Okay, so this novel was guh-orgeous!! I rushed right through the third installation in the Maximum Ride series. (This is also the third book in the Fugitives mini-series.)

Lots more action, same great amount of adventure (this time they get to go to Europe!), and more evil characters. The best part for me was that we finally figured out who Max's parents are; I already knew, unfortunately, because I read about the series on Wikipedia (what can I say? I'm a sucker for looking things up).

But anyway, the novel really was amazing. Fang and Max finally figure out how they feel about each other. You will SO be surprised! :) Recommending this novel to anyone who has begun this series! Recommending the entire series to anyone who hasn't read it yet!

Quotes from the Book:

" 'She's going to let Ari eat us! But it won't be easy for him!'
Time-out. Okay, now, tell the truth: When's the last time you had to decide to make it hard for someone to eat you?"

" 'Wait, don't tell me,' Total said, trotting after me. 'We're gonna break in, steal some stuff, break some stuff, almost ge caught, and then escape in some dangerous, dramatic way.' "

"Excellent. Just what the world needed: another Angel. Because God knows, one six-year-old mind-controlling flying child just isn't enough."

" 'Tell us about your sense of direction. How does it work?' They all looked at me expectantly.
'Well, it's like I have a GPS inside me,' I told them. 'One of the talking ones. I tell it where I want to go, and it tells me, Go twenty miles, turn left, take Exit Ninety-four, and so on. It can be pretty bossy, frankly.'
Their eyes widened. 'Really?' one said.
'No, you idiot,' I said in disgust."

(This book was HILARIOUS!)

School's Out - Forever by James Patterson

School's Out - Forever (Maximum Ride, #2; The Fugitives, #2)
By James Patterson
Publisher: Little, brown and Company, 2006
409 pages, paperback
Date Finished: 9/6/2010
Genres: Action, Adventure, Coming of Age, Fantasy, Science Fiction, Young Adult

First Line of Book: "Sweeping, swooping, soaring, air-current thrill rides -- there's nothing better."
Last Line of Book: "Fang and I leaned against each other and laughed and laughed, unable to speak, for the longest time."

Review: This book was amazing! After waiting a whole month to read the sequel to The Angel Experiment, I was more than happy to to start this novel. There was more action, adventure, and more humans that make Max and the flock feel normal. More battles with Erasers -- wo've been upgraded; they now have wings -- and more romacne. Tere seems to be quite a few people kissing in School's Out - Forever, but it didn't go any farther so it's pretty clean :). I am definitely recommending this book and series. If you hven't read School's Out Forever, you should start ASAP. If you have even read The Angel Experiment: what are you waiting for?!!

Quotes from the Book:

"Compared to the Erasers, we were nimble little stinging wasps, and they were cluinky, slow, awkward flying cows."

" 'Boy, you just can't kill people like you used to,' said Fang."

"Later I sat at the table doing my homework, which is just anotehr term for "grown-up-imposed yet self-inflicted torture," IMHO." {IMHO = in my humble opinion}

"In less than a minute I had to angle out of it and swoop up again so I didn't squish like a mosquito on the windshield of the world.
Who said poetry was dead?"

" 'I'll be second-in-command,' Total offered.
'Oh yeah, you'd be so focused on the job,' Gazzy sneered. 'Until a rabbit ran across your path.' "

" 'How?' I persisted. 'We look identical. She even had indentical scars and scratches. She was wearing my clothes. How could you tell us apart?'

Fang turned to me and grinned, making my world brighter. 'She offered to cook breakfast.' "

Book Review - The Angel Experiment

The Angel Experiment (The Fugitives, #1; Maximum Ride, #1)
By James Patterson
Publisher: Little, Brown and Company, 2005
422 pages
Read: 6/19/2010
Genres: Fantasy, Young Adult, Science Fiction, Adventure, Action, Coming of Age

First Line of Book: "Congratulations. The fact that you're reading this means you've taken one giant step closer to surviving till your next birthday."

Review: The Angel Experiment was a reread for me, as I'd only read it a month before. This series debut was very intriguing. The characters were different--besides the fact that they were teenage mutants--and we got to see from the whole flock's perspective. It was a little choppy, though, as the book's chapters are so short and didn't include a lot of information.

The book starts off sort of fast-paced: Max explains everything as she goes along with the story, so you have to keep up with everything or you get lost in the midst of action. The flock's youngest member has been kidnapped by Erasers--half men, half wolves; also mutants--and taken somewhere that none of them ever wished to see again. Now, Max and her family set out to rescue their beloved sibling, getting beat up, captured, and chased by evil, infamous Erasers along the way. Max is having head troubles, and starts thinking she's going to be the first to die. And Angel discovers some mysterious powers of her own. But, in the end, all is well with the flock, and they set out to find the one thing they all have wondered about--their parents.

This book was absolutely amazing. Let's compare the wonderful book hypothetically: I'm on the road, looking for a rest stop. These motel owners get me interested in their place. I stop and stay the night. Automatically, they have me loving the place, with all their hospitality and politeness, giving me everything I need and want without thinking twice about it. Defined, fascinating, and a great price.

Rating: I rate The Angel Experiment (aka, the motel)
5 kisses!

Quotes from the Book:

"He'd been the Gasman ever since he was a baby. What can I say? The child has something funky with his digestive system."

"Fang is not the huggiest person in the world--he turns into an unbending statue, and you just have to do the best you can."

"In the dictionary, next to the word stress, there is a picture of a midsize mutant stuck inside a dog crate, wondering if her destiny is to be killed or to save the world. Okay, not really. But there should be."

"I clamped my lips together so I wouldn't answer it. When I wanted information, it was silent; when I didn't want to hear from it, it got chatty. It was almost as irritating as Fang."

" 'We're in the Institute,' I said.
'Uhm, is that a good thing?' asked Gazzy.
'Holy [insert a swear word of your choice here],' Fang said, stunned.
'No kidding,' I said."

" 'You really hurt me. I wouldn't hurt you. Not like this.' " Ari
